Dental Botox In Albuquerque, NM

Although many have heard of Botox, short for Botulinum toxin, few know what is does, what it is, and what it is used for. Cosmetic Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected into the muscles of the face. It is used to temporarily improve the look of both moderate to severe crow’s feet and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults. However, Botox is also used in dentistry! Visit us for dental botox in Albuquerque, NM.

What Is Dental Botox?

Botox Cosmetic has been tested for over twenty years and has one of the highest proven safety records. Side effects are typically temporary. Bo-tox® Cosmetic is a Natural Purified Protein derived from bacteria, just as Penicillin is derived from mold. Lines and wrinkles form from movement of the brow muscles. Botox® Cosmetic injections reduce the muscle contractions that cause skin to crease. Botox has grown in popularity and use over the last 50 years or so.

The effect of a botox injection is to relax or block neuromuscular transmission to the injection site. While the primary use currently is cosmetic, the dental community has discovered that if injected into a muscle of the face or neck, Botox will relax strained muscles so those areas can recover.

Patients who clench or grind their teeth, consciously or not, cause a tremendous amount of strain on the lower and upper jaw muscles as well as their necks. Dr. Snyder offers this treatment in the office.

There are several options before we begin treatment. Since this is an injection, and there is some discomfort, there are several methods to make this less uncomfortable if required including:

  • We can offer a small numbing injection to start.

  • A prescription cream can be applied 60 to 90 minutes before the procedure.

  • A blast of very cold air is directed at the skin for about 10 seconds to help numb the area

During the procedure a thin needle is used to inject tiny amounts of botulinum toxin into your skin or muscles. You can expect to resume all normal daily activities immediately following the procedure. Dental Botox is used to help relax strained muscles in your jaw and neck so those areas can recover.

Why Go to a Dentist for Botulinum Toxin?

Why go to a dentist for botulinum toxin, otherwise known as Botox treatment?  It is now estimated that almost 20% of North American dentists are performing Botox and dermal filler therapy, whether for cosmetic or therapeutic reasons.

The Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers:

Botox is a protein that can be injected into the facial muscles.  It doesn’t affect the muscles themselves. It blocks the transmitters in the nerves that trigger the muscles and stops them from contracting. This halts the motion that induces wrinkles. Three to ten days after the treatment, the skin surrounding these muscles smooths itself out.

Dermal fillers are injections that replace the collagen and fat in the skin that naturally wane as we age, leading to thinning lips and deep wrinkles.

Benefits of Botox

Besides the cosmetic effects, studies have shown that Botox helps patients with facial pain, TMJ and bruxism.  Botox injections can retrain muscles to help people adjust to dentures or oral devices. In such cases, having a trained dentist who understands the aesthetic and dental part of the procedure administer the injections, is truly beneficial.

Dentists are experts of the muscle and bone architecture of the face. Their training and experience are steeped in facial structure and muscles. They have trained for numerous years and have a background that equips them with the ability to achieve more precise and natural-looking results than other Botox health professionals.

Other reasons to go to a dentist for Botox treatment:

  • Though a dermatologist or plastic surgeon is definitely qualified, in most cases, it is the Physician’s Assistant or nurse who administers the Botox injections.

  • Most patients, who receive cosmetic treatments, report that injections done by dentists are less painful and quicker than injections done by other healthcare workers.
