Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that surround your teeth. This infection is caused by bacteria that stick to your teeth, gums, and dental appliances. As these bacteria multiply, they form a sticky, colorless film called plaque. The bacteria in plaque produce toxins that cause inflammation of the gums and lead to periodontal disease.
