What is a toothache?

To understand why a toothache happens, let’s take a closer look at how your teeth work. Your teeth are made of several layers. On the outside of the tooth, there is a hard coating called enamel. Enamel protects the softer inside layers of the tooth. This softer layer is called “dentin”. Dentin contains thousands of tiny channels that lead to the center of the tooth. This channel is called the “pulp”. Here is where the nerve is located. The nerve provides sensation to your teeth.

Sometimes, tooth decay or an infection can cause the pulp to become irritated. This can cause pain. The pulp is protected by the dentin. When dentin is damaged, the pulp becomes exposed. This can cause pain.
