Maintain Healthy Teeth During the Holidays

Maintain healthy teeth during the holidays by following a few simple guidelines from the Best dentist in Albuquerque, NM.  Holidays are a time of joy, families and endless trays of meats, cheeses, snacks and baked goods.  People’s diets, exercise routines, sleep schedules and dental practices are exchanged for get togethers, parties, feasting and dirty Santa.  Below are a few tips to help you keep your teeth healthy and a few pounds off your waist this holiday season.

Foods to Avoid

Hard Candies – these rock-solid goodies are often the main culprit for chipped or broken teeth.  No one wants an unscheduled trip to the dentist.  If you do want to treat yourself to a piece of hard candy, let the candy dissolve in your mouth instead of biting down and trying to chew it.

Soft Candies – these gooey candies are notorious for sticking to your teeth and every space in between.  On top of causing decay in the enamel, they are well-known for pulling out fillings or pulling off crowns.

Sugary foods – yes, these are the hardest to avoid.  There are so many wonderful, delectable treats on the dessert table.  But just for the record, sugar is one of the biggest enemies to your oral health as well as your waistline.  Keep the sugary goodies to a minimum.

Foods to Feast On

Vegetables – so okay, the vegetable tray isn’t as appealing as the dessert tray but broccoli, carrots and cauliflower are excellent detoxifiers. They are loaded with powerful antioxidants that can remove toxins including uric acid. Arthritis, gout, and boils are related to problems with toxins. You can purify your body with these colorful vegetables.

Meats – they are great sources of protein. They also provide lots of other nutrients your body needs, like iodine, iron, zinc, vitamins (especially B12) and essential fatty acids. Excluding process meats which contain large amounts of saturated fat and sodium, meats help maintain a well-balanced diet.

Cheese – bring on the cheese tray.  White cheese is a great source of calcium, fat, and protein.  They also contain high amounts of vitamins A and B-12, along with zinc, phosphorus, and riboflavin. Cheese made from the milk of 100 percent grass-fed animals is the highest in nutrients and also contains omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin K-2.

Teeth are Not a Swiss Army Knife

Teeth do an amazing job of breaking down the huge array of foods that pass through our lips.  But…they were not designed for cracking nuts, tearing into packages, ripping off tape, or opening beer bottles.  Be kind to your teeth.

Happy Holidays!  Remember to brush and floss regularly, especially after eating sugary foods.  Drink plenty of water and most importantly stay healthy this holiday season.
