Laser Treatment for Gum Disease

Laser treatment for gum disease can help you get your smile back on track. Gum tissue, when healthy, allows us to chew, talk and smile with comfort.  When gum tissue becomes infected with bacteria (periodontal disease) it causes gum recession, bone degeneration, and tooth loss. Eating, speaking, and grinning is no longer done with ease.  According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research 2 in 5 adults suffer from some form of gum disease.

The advanced technology of laser therapy is a proven technique for repairing gums and treating periodontal disease.  Dr. Abeyta uses laser dentistry in her practice in Albuquerque, NM. Laser technology treats gum disease non-invasively, eliminating the need for surgery and a lengthy recovery.

How Does Laser Therapy Repair the Gums?

The laser is used to remove the inflamed and infected gum tissue.  Once the infected gum tissue is removed the dentist will have better access to the root surfaces so that they may be thoroughly cleaned with Piezo ultrasonic scalers and hand scalers (Piezo scalers may adversely affect how a cardiac pacemaker functions).

The laser will then be used again to remove any remaining infected gum tissue and to kill bacteria lingering in the gum pocket.

What are the Benefits of Laser Therapy on Gums?

  • Less discomfort during treatment
  • Reduced post treatment pain and swelling
  • Rapid healing time
  • Less bleeding
  • Fewer post-surgical complications
  • Less trauma to the surrounding dental tissue
  • Bacterial reduction

In addition to the above benefits, laser treatment is completely customizable so that it can personalized for the individual’s needs.

What are the Signs of Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal Disease is associated with poor hygiene.  Hint – floss and brush your teeth at least two times a day!
