Although many have heard of Botox, short for Botulinum toxin, few know what is does, what it is, and what it is used for. Cosmetic Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected into the muscles of the face. It is used to temporarily improve the look of both moderate to severe crow’s feet and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults. However, Botox is also used in dentistry!

What Is Botox?

Botox Cosmetic has been tested for over twenty years and has one of the highest proven safety records. Side effects are typically temporary. Bo-tox® Cosmetic is a Natural Purified Protein derived from bacteria, just as Penicillin is derived from mold. Lines and wrinkles form from movement of the brow muscles. Botox® Cosmetic injections reduce the muscle contractions that cause skin to crease. Botox has grown in popularity and use over the last 50 years or so.

The effect of a botox injection is to relax or block neuromuscular transmission to the injection site. While the primary use currently is cosmetic, the dental community has discovered that if injected into a muscle of the face or neck, Botox will relax strained muscles so those areas can recover.

Patients who clench or grind their teeth, consciously or not, cause a tremendous amount of strain on the lower and upper jaw muscles as well as their necks.

Dr. Abeyta offers this treatment in the office.

There are several options before we begin treatment. Since this is an injection, and there is some discomfort, there are several methods to make this less uncomfortable if required including:

  • We can offer a small numbing injection to start.
  • A prescription cream can be applied 60 to 90 minutes before the procedure.
  • A blast of very cold air is directed at the skin for about 10 seconds to help numb the area

During the procedure a thin needle is used to inject tiny amounts of botulinum toxin into your skin or muscles.

You can expect to resume all normal daily activities immediately following the procedure.

Dental Botox is used to help relax strained muscles in your jaw and neck so those areas can recover. Please contact the office to learn more or make an appointment.
