Children’s dental health month was in February. We miss it but that doesn’t mean Dr. Abeyta isn’t doing all that she can to bring awareness to her patients on this important topic.
Each year in February, the American Dental Association (ADA) brings together professionals and healthcare providers to promote the benefits of good oral health for children.
One of the most common chronic diseases of childhood is tooth decay and the thing about tooth decay is that it is absolutely preventable. And studies have shown that children with poor dental health miss more school and receive lower grades than kids who have a healthy mouth.
Plus, tooth decay can contribute to more than just pain and oral issues such as:
Supporting healthy teeth and gums is a lifelong commitment. The earlier a child is introduced to proper oral hygiene habits such as brushing, flossing, and limiting sugary snacks and drinks the better for oral and overall health.
Talk to your children about their oral health care habits and help them establish a daily routine of brushing and flossing. Explain that their teeth can’t heal themselves so it’s up to them to take care of their teeth.
The NCDHM Program Planning Guide provides resources to promote the benefits of good dental health to children, including downloadable coloring sheets.
It is recommended that children visit their dentist by the time they have their first birthday or when that first tooth pops through. Teaching them good oral hygiene habits when they are young will help them develop healthy habits for a lifetime.
